50 Years of Search and Rescue (SAR) at Palma de Mallorca |
Commanded by Lt. Col. Fernando Delgado Cobos, 801 Escuadrón celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004 and fifty years of Search and Rescue (SAR) on 4 October 2005.
The squadron was created at Pollença, Palma de Mallorca, on 3 August 1954 . It was designated 50 Escuadrilla and was equipped with Grumman Albatross. One year later, on 17 June 1955 , it was officially created as a SAR squadron.
Mid-1959, it moved to Base Area Son San Juan, situated North of Palma Airport and was renamed 55 Escuadrilla. The squadron was involved in sea rescue, maritime patrol and search missions. On 1 April 1965 , it was renamed 801 Escuadrón and flew the Albatross until 1978 when the new Casa 212 Aviocar arrived. Helicopters were also used, namely Agusta Bell 205s which were replaced by Pumas in 1983.
801 Escuadrón is currently equipped with five Pumas and four Casa 212s including three equipped for the SAR mission and recognisable by their long radar nose. Since its creation the squadron has flown over 84.093 hours and has performed 310 mountain and sea rescues, 1120 sea patrols and 827 casualty evacuations.
I would like to thank the following persons for their help in arranging the visit of Base area Son San Juan : Public relation of Spanish Air Force Hq, Lt Colonel Fenando Delgado Cobos , Lt Vidal and the Puma aircrews of 801 Escuadrón who escorted me during my visit.
